Following hibernation, our server finally has a stable internet connection and further improvements. It has joined the PilsFree network and moved into a new home. Here is some information about our new provider and what this means for you, our players.
PilsFree, z.s. is an open community of people with a shared goal: running and developing a computer network in Plzeň and the surrounding area. The network was created by PilsFree members and continues to be developed in their free time. This creates important differences from commercial providers, starting with its legal form. It began as a civic association and is now a registered association, hence PilsFree, z.s. Its aim is to build a network with its own social and technical rules. That makes it an ideal partner for our server, which is non-commercial and has been completely free for all players for 10 years, including a two-year hibernation.
I would like to thank the PilsFree board and its chairman for allowing us to run our server in their server facilities for the cost of electricity and the membership fee. This shows that people who do things mainly for fun, in their free time, also exist beyond our own server.
What this move changes for our server:
• A fast connection to the backbone network (1 GB/s) in both directions.
• A stable environment with powerful air conditioning.
• No risk of rising temperatures reducing performance.
• Backup power supplies for electricity outages.
• SAS server drives with high speed and a long service life.
• Almost no internet or power outages.
• Minimal latency even under heavy load.
• If the server freezes, the hosting environment will no longer be the cause.
• No peak-time restrictions of the kind found on commercial connections.
• Players connected through PilsFree will enjoy even better latency.
• Lower monthly server costs than commercial alternatives.
